The Injury That Changed My Direction
There are moments in life that completely change the direction you’re headed. For me, it happened during what should have been one of the most exciting seasons of my life. I was entering my second year as a professional football player with the NFL’s Detroit Lions, and everything was starting to click. The game had finally slowed down. I was playing free, having fun, and putting together some of the best performances of my young career. It felt like all the years of sacrifice were beginning to pay off. Then, without warning, everything changed. I suffered a seizure.
One day I was preparing for the next game. The next, I was in a hospital bed wondering what had just happened. Before long, I was released from the team, and suddenly the career I had spent my entire life chasing was gone. No one really prepares you for that. When your identity has been wrapped up in one dream for so long, losing it leaves you asking one question:
“What’s next?”

There were moments of uncertainty. Moments of fear. Moments where I didn’t understand why God would allow something like this to happen. Looking back now, I realize God wasn’t taking something away from me. He was leading me somewhere greater.
The seizure was terrifying, not only for me, but for my family, my friends, my teammates, and everyone who cared about me. It scared a lot of people. But through God’s grace, I came out of it unharmed. I could still walk. I could still talk. I was still here. That realization changed everything. God had given me another chance; not just to live, but to live with purpose. Instead of asking, “Why did this happen to me?” I started asking, “How can I use the life God gave me to help someone else?”
That question became my mission.
It’s why I founded The Moe Norris Foundation. It’s why we’re creating opportunities for people with disabilities. It’s why we’re investing in accessibility technology, workforce opportunities, innovation, adaptive sports, entrepreneurship, and experiences that remind people they are capable of incredible things.
My NFL journey taught me discipline. My injury taught me perspective. My faith gave me purpose. Today, I don’t see that seizure as the end of my story. I see it as the moment God redirected my life toward the work I was always meant to do.
If my story can give one person hope… If one child believes in themselves because of something we built… If one family feels seen… If one innovation gives someone more independence… Then every obstacle I’ve faced has been worth it. I’m forever grateful for the life God has given me. And as long as He gives me breath, I’ll spend it serving others, creating opportunity, and reminding people that no matter what they’ve been through, their greatest chapter may still be ahead of them.
